You might be asking, “dude! Stop with the riddles, what are you talking about?” and I’d respond with, “woah, settle down! I was just getting there.” Then you’d say “well hurry up with it then I don’t have all day…you tool!” I’d feel hurt and start to cry, then you’d comfort me in your warm embrace, while I told you this.

So I’ve never done green screen before, but when I was invited to participate in this show at the Mendel I decided to try it. So with just over a month I set out to master chroma keying, motion tracking, and all the other post prossessing elements, plus come up with a cohesive story, and try to make it as good as Hollywood.

I set myself a time frame, ordered some green screen material started building a world, and figured I’d be good.

Lesson #1

The first thing I learned is never give yourself a time frame if you have no idea what you’re doing.

But as the fool I am that’s what I did. I jumped into the deep end head first not knowing that the deep end was actually the shallow end. After suffering some head trauma I realized that I’d have to change things up a little.

The reason that I haven’t been posting for the past few months is the level of busy that is currently monopolizing my time… Lame, I know. Anyway as a result I haven’t done anything. The video posts just take too much time, so they’re going to become a little less frequent… But possibly more frequent than the last 2.5 months. The written posts however will become quite a bit more frequent as I have an iPhone and can post while I’m on the toilet and waiting for things.

What this means is that the format of the blog is going to be changing a little. It will become a lttle more cereberal an a little less practical. Those in phd programs will enjoy that. It will also cover a broader range of stuff and be less focused solely on cinematography, or even film.

Well that’s what it is, and I’m who I am, and this is a blog, an you have a computer.

So now that I’m approaching graduation, I need to produce something that proves to my professors that I’m capable in my chosen area of study.  My chosen area of study was painting and drawing, so of course I chose to demonstrate my ability in… Video.  Probably not the smartest thing I’ve ever done, but definitely not something I regret.  Another problem, on top of having very limited experience in actually making video was, there were no tenured professors at the University who actually taught video. (the summer class was taught by a sessional professor)  This made it rather difficult to put together a BFA committee.  But put together it was, then evaluated I was.  I graduated, and got by BFA.

Now the project that I put together for my BFA show has a whole other story.  Gather around and listen to it’s tale Woe, Whoa and WHHOOOAAA!!!

It all began on a fall afternoon, the leaves were changing colour, the breeze smelled of nature dying, and school had begun anew.  For a young film maker this was the moment of change.  He had arrived and all was good.  He approached the day head on and began to assemble a team of superheroes.  He began auditioning the superheroes, and audition they did.  They came from all corners of the University, just for the chance to join the team, and they waited, breaths baited for the man that would be their King.  And he was a gallant man.  Masked, Caped, and Shielded, Captain Yield showed assured the masses that under his watch they would be safe.

Having been selected as the teams super leader, Captain Yield bared his soul.  As he wove his tale, a single child sat listening as if the story was just for him. When Captain Yields tale was finished a single tear escaped the boys eye and fell to the ground. The boy choked back his remaining tears, for he was a man, and thus shouldn’t cry. The tear was saddened by this, thinking to itself that perhaps it would be doomed to remain alone forever.

Just as the tear was thinking this, it began to rain, but this was no normal rain dear reader, this was the rain of thousands of tears falling from thousands of eyes, for as the Captains speech had touched the heart of this small boy, so too did it touch the heart of every man woman and child watching.  So dear reader, now it’s your chance to watch this “Super” man, and shed a tear or two.

“Actually, for lots of my recent work, I’ve been doing it on my own. But I usually make very precise plans, and then I go shoot my film once with a mini DV camera, alone with an actor, and then edit it as a first draft. If I’m happy with it, I use it as a prototype and show it to every key member of the crew. Then I choose stills from the film to build a precise storyboard for the actual shoot.”

I really like this process idea. Now it’s going to be a little more work, but it clearly works. I’m going to implement this process with the Halloween short I was planning. It’s going to take a little longer, but I think it’ll yield better results.

So after “Walking on Sunshine.”  The Kung-fu film, I had a taste of film making in my mouth, and it tasted good.  I was however, still a painter at heart.  Also there were no classes that I knew of that offered video/film as part of their curriculum.  Not one to be deterred by something as trivial as a class not existing I ventured forward.  I decided that I could kill 2 birds with one stone.  So…I began approaching my non art Professors with requests to do videos instead of essays.  Now essays are much easier than videos, and generally take less time, but videos are much more fun and you don’t have to site sources as much, because your sources are speaking…Huzzah.

Now the only professors who would let me do this were my religious studies profs.  It’s interesting that it was the ones who taught the eastern religions, and not the ones who taught western religions.  Anyway that doesn’t matter, so at the end of this I had two more videos in my repertoire.  One about Reincarnation, and another called “Zen and Snowglobes.”  I can’t show these due to the music used in them. <sad>

So after this I really had the bug and in the summer of 2002 there was a bastion of hope.  This hope came in the form of a video art class.  I think it might have been offered as an evening class once before, but I this was the first I had heard of it.  Anyway, long story short, I was stoked.

The first video I made in this class was “Superhero Dilemma.”  I still really like this video, and feel it’s quite good.  I worked really hard on it.  The assignment was to do a 2 minute narrative.  I would like to say I worked as hard as I did out of a determination for excellence, but that would be a falsity (Wow I’m surprised that’s actually a word.)  The true reason for me working so hard on “Superhero Dilemma” was a girl.  There was this very attractive girl in the class, and I wanted to know her better.  I’m a little shy, so I thought I would use my art to catch her eye. (I knew my fashion sense at the time would just push her away.)  It’s also a fairly autobiographical piece so it was a chance for her to know me better.  Alas when by the time I finally showed it to the class, she was no longer in it.

Anyway here’s the video.

Another video I did in the class was “Doll.”  One day I was walking my dog, Winston, and we came upon a burned dolls foot.  When I first saw it, I thought it might be a real foot, but it happily wasn’t.  This got me thinking…”Woah, I should make a video about a burned doll.”  So I went and bought a doll, ripped it apart, burned it, then made a video about me finding the pieces.

Finally a third video that stood out for me, and the last one I did in the class was called “Superhero.” The assignment here was to make a predominantly audio piece. So in this one the visuals weren’t all that important. This is a piece you could just listen to and it could actually have a similar impact as if you watched it.

For this one what I did was  go around the university interviewing everyone I came into contact with about superheroes, then I took the best ones and made the video.  You don’t need to be an expert to have an opinion on superheroes.  They’re part of everyones life whether they like it or not.  Anyway I took the best of these and made the video you see before you.

So that’s the end of my video class.  Next we’ll talk about how these video developments influenced the BFA show that changed my life!

Autodidact: Self taught.

I learned this while meeting my competition for the first time. Well not competition in the sense that I want to beat this person, but in the sense that I now have something to strive for.

He is the #1 most subscribed on Youtube Canada, and from what I’ve seen he definitely deserves it. Who is this mystery man. (Edit) He’s actually #25 most subscribed on Youtube Canada, but he’s 1st on Page 2.

Patrick Boivin, and he too is an Autodidact Director. The only difference between him and I is that he’s Waaaayyy better than me.

Anyway, so there’s something to shoot for at least. Looks like I’m going to have to work even harder than I planned to reach my goal.

Now I’m probably not going to get into the animation and effects as much, but, he’s still my competition/goal…for now.

So after hours of slaving and doing back breaking labour in the pursuit of being watchable, I came up with one way to make me someone you dear reader could love.  It’s short, it’s sweet and its to the point… sort of.  Although trying to keep my thoughts organized is an effort, I’ll do it for you.  Why?  Because I care.

So being concerned that I might be boring people as an earlier post stated, I decided to try and interest my self up a little.  To do this, one of the things I did was light myself better.  I know production values don’t make people more interesting, they do however sometimes make them more attractive.  Also, since this blog is all about production values I thought I’d production value myself up.

This was really my first attempt at the classic 3 light setup, the interview standard.  I’ve seen it done plenty a time, but have never tried it myself.  I think the results were decent.  There’s a few things I might change, but for the next few blogs at least I’m going to be doing things this way for the next few posts.

Well since this post is more about the video end of things, I’ll let it do the talking.
